Microsoft to Recall Thousands of Surface Power Cords Due to Overheating

A recent report on Channelnomics Europe has suggested that Microsoft is preparing to recall a large number of power cords for earlier models of its Surface range of tablets. The reason for this recall is believed to be the overheating issue caused by these power cables.

The report also suggests that Microsoft will release a statement on 22nd January, Friday at 6am PST announcing a “voluntary recall” of AC power cords of its Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 models. Microsoft will reportedly recall power cables of all devices sold before July 2015.

A statement from Microsoft spokesperson published on Channelnomics Europe and also confirmed by ZDNet states that the recall is applicable to cords that are sharply or repeatedly bent or wrapped. “A very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord.” – the statement further suggests.

As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly.

Eligible customers who wish to replace their cable will be directed to to a ‘specially constructed website’ as on Friday where they can order their replacement. According to ZDNet report, this will be a worldwide voluntary recall. In the U.S., Microsoft will be providing the free power cord exchanges for Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 models sold before March 2015.

The newly released Surface Pro 4 model or non-Pro Surface models will not be affected by this recall.

We will be waiting for an official public announcement from Microsoft.
