How to Pair Surface Pen with Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book

Microsoft Surface is one the most productive devices out there. Now powered by Windows 10, Surface devices give familiar experience on any Windows 10 device you might be working on. When coupled with Surface Pen, a Surface device can be even more productive. Today, I will show you how to pair Surface Pen with Surface device i.e. Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book.

When you power-on a Surface device for the first time, the initial setup allow you to pair Surface Pen with it. It might be possible that you might have skipped that step, or you might have bought a new Surface Pen and you need to pair it with your Surface device. Your reasons may vary so it doesn’t really matter why you are pairing a Surface Pen. Let us go ahead and pair Surface Pen with your Surface device.

How to Pair Surface Pen with Surface 3, Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book

Step 1: Make sure your Surface device is updated

Before pairing Surface Pen, make sure your Surface device has most recent updates installed. This will help it get latest drivers and improvements.

Head over to Start > Settings > Update & Security on your Surface where you can see if new updates are available. If so, run the update and reboot to apply updates.

Step 2: Pairing Surface Pen
  • Now that your Surface has latest updates installed, you can start pairing Surface Pen with it.
  • To do so, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth.
  • Turn on Bluetooth if it is turned off.
  • After turning on Bluetooth, Surface Pen might appear as discovered device. It is possible that the Pen is not paired properly so we will remove the Pen and pair it again to make sure it gets configured properly.
  • Select the Pen from the list and remove it.
  • Now let your Surface device re-discover Surface Pen. To do so, press and hold the top button of Surface Pen for around seven seconds.
  • On the original Surface Pen, light in the middle of the pen clip starts to flash. On the new Surface Pen light on the flat side of the pen glows white.
  • Now your Pen should appear in the list of Bluetooth devices. Select it from the list and choose Pair.

That’s it. Your Surface Pen is now paired with your Surface device.
